Goddess Zisa

The goddess Zisa is known as the wife of the god Tyr/Ziu. In Germany she is well known and seen as the founder and protector of the city of Augsburg. In the Christian era she was seen as the Virgin Mary and became known as the “Undoer-of-Knots.” An evolution of this idea, Zisa eventually became known as the remover of obstacles. In modern Heathen spiritual practices, she is even said to be able to undo or rewrite one’s orlog if the person’s cause is just.

Zisa was so popular is Augsburg, Germany that the Catholic church built the Saint Peter am Perlach which stands on the grounds of her temple at Zisenberg in Augsburg.

Zisa’s symbol is the pinecone and appears in many places in Augsburg. She is so popular that the city of Augsburg has her symbol, the pinecone, on their coat of arms and the city flag.

The goddess Zisa’s symbol, the pinecone, is related to her being the protector of Augsburg. The pinecone protects its seeds as she protects the city. Plus, the pinecone is the symbol of protection and regeneration. Zisa is a healer goddess and during a plague, came into town to help heal the people and told them how to care for others and not get sick themselves.  She stated that to be healthy we must wash hands and clothes, bathe daily, get plenty of sunshine, and eat a healthy diet. Believe it or not this was seen as radical advice at the time.
